Yin Wood Day Master (Yi 乙): The Weaver
By Five Elements of You · Updated
Yin Wood (乙, Yi) is the second of the ten Heavenly Stems, and as a Day Master it carries the archetype The Weaver. You grow through flexibility and connection, finding support without surrendering your own direction.
Your Day Master is the stem on the day pillar of your BaZi chart, the character that stands for you. If yours is Yi Wood, this page describes the temperament it points to, what tends to support it, and how to work with it. Remember that it is one character out of eight: the rest of your chart colors how it shows up.

The nature of Yin Wood
Yi Wood is the vine, the grass, the flowering branch. It is not the tallest thing in the forest, but it is everywhere: climbing walls, covering hillsides, finding sunlight through the smallest gaps. As a Day Master, Yi describes someone who grows through flexibility, timing and relationships.
Yi people are often perceptive about others. They notice who can help, who needs help and how a group fits together. Their strength is not in confronting obstacles head-on but in finding a way around, over or through them, and they usually get there.
Behind the gentleness there is persistence. A vine that seems fragile can, over years, wrap around a tree or split a stone wall. Yi's quiet tenacity is easy to underestimate.
What the classics say
The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text, describes each of the ten stems in four short lines. For Yi it reads: 乙木虽柔,刲羊解牛,怀丁抱丙,跨凤乘猴。
The old text describes Yi Wood as soft yet able to cut through what is far harder than itself — surviving difficult ground by warmth, timing and flexibility rather than force.
The Weaver: natural strengths
Adaptability. Yi bends with circumstances instead of breaking against them.
Connection. Yi is a natural networker and collaborator, good at weaving people and ideas together.
Diplomacy and taste. Many Yi Day Masters have a refined sense of beauty, tact and timing.
Quiet persistence. Yi keeps growing in difficult conditions and often succeeds where force would fail.
Watch-outs
Dependence. A vine needs something to climb. Yi may lean too much on others for direction or approval.
Avoiding conflict. Flexibility can turn into saying yes when Yi means no.
Scattered growth. Reaching in every direction at once can leave Yi's energy spread thin.
What supports Yin Wood
The classics say Yi Wood, though soft, survives hard ground by holding Fire close: warmth, expression and visibility let it thrive where it might otherwise wither. Yi does best in environments where it can be seen and appreciated.
Water nourishes Yi gently, through learning and reflection, and a stable structure (often Earth, sometimes a strong Jia-like person or institution) gives it something to grow along. Yi struggles when it is cut back too harshly by heavy Metal or flooded by more input than it can absorb.
Inner adjustment: working with your nature
In Five Elements of You, balance means changing behavior, never buying objects or colors. A few practices that suit this Day Master:
Choose your trellis. Name the one or two people, projects or communities you most want to grow alongside this season, and invest there.
Practice the clean no. Each week, decline one request kindly and without over-explaining.
Make your work visible. Share progress before it's polished. Yi gains strength from warmth and recognition.
Yin Wood and Yang Wood
Jia and Yi are both Wood. Jia is the upright tree that leads and stands alone; Yi is the vine that adapts and grows with others. Yi's flexibility is not weakness: it is a different strategy for the same goal of growth. Read more about Yang Wood (Jia 甲), The Pioneer, or explore the Wood element as a whole.

What is a Yi Wood Day Master?
Yi (乙) is Yin Wood, the second Heavenly Stem. As a Day Master it is pictured as a vine, grass or flowering plant, and describes a flexible, perceptive and relationship-oriented temperament. Its archetype in Five Elements of You is The Weaver.
What element supports a Yi Wood Day Master?
Classically Yi does well with Fire for warmth and visibility, and with gentle Water for nourishment. Excess Metal can cut it back too hard. The full balance depends on the whole chart.
Is Yi Wood weak?
No. Yin stems are not weaker than Yang stems; they work differently. The classics describe Yi as soft yet able to cut through things far harder than itself, through timing and flexibility rather than force.
