Day Master 5 of 10
Yang Earth Day Master (Wu 戊): The Mountain
By Five Elements of You · Updated
Yang Earth (戊, Wu) is the fifth of the ten Heavenly Stems, and as a Day Master it carries the archetype The Mountain. You hold steady at the center, giving form and stability to what gathers around you.
Your Day Master is the stem on the day pillar of your BaZi chart, the character that stands for you. If yours is Wu Earth, this page describes the temperament it points to, what tends to support it, and how to work with it. Remember that it is one character out of eight: the rest of your chart colors how it shows up.

The nature of Yang Earth
Wu Earth is the mountain: massive, stable, still. Weather moves across it, seasons change on its slopes, and it remains. As a Day Master, Wu describes a steady, dependable and protective temperament: the person others gather around when things get uncertain.
Wu people tend to be calm, patient and practical. They don't rush. They prefer to think things through and commit for the long term, and once committed they are very hard to move. Their reliability is their quiet authority.
The classics describe Wu as solid and centered, closing inward in stillness and opening outward in motion, quietly setting the conditions other things live by. A mountain shapes the weather, the rivers and the life on it simply by being there.
What the classics say
The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text, describes each of the ten stems in four short lines. For Wu it reads: 戊土固重,既中且正,静翕动辟,万物司命。
The old text calls Wu Earth solid and centered — closing inward in stillness, opening outward in motion, and quietly setting the conditions that other things live by.
The Mountain: natural strengths
Stability. Wu is the anchor in a team, family or crisis.
Trustworthiness. Wu keeps its word and keeps confidences.
Protection. Like a mountain sheltering a valley, Wu instinctively looks after people.
Long-term thinking. Wu builds things to last and is unbothered by short-term noise.
Watch-outs
Immovability. Wu can resist change long after change has become necessary.
Slow to open up. Wu's inner world can be hard for others to reach.
Carrying too much. A mountain bears whatever is placed on it, and Wu may not say when the weight is too heavy.
What supports Yang Earth
Wu benefits from Fire, which warms the mountain and brings it to life: passion, expression and connection keep it from becoming cold and remote. Some Wood is also good for Wu, the way forests make a mountain fertile; challenges and new ideas keep it from going barren.
Water around a mountain can be nourishing, giving Wu something to steady and direct. Too much Earth, though, makes Wu heavy and stuck.
Inner adjustment: working with your nature
In Five Elements of You, balance means changing behavior, never buying objects or colors. A few practices that suit this Day Master:
Move one stone. Make one small deliberate change in your routine each week to keep from setting into stone.
Name the weight. Tell someone when you are carrying too much, before it becomes a crisis.
Let people in. Share a thought or feeling you would usually keep private with one close person.
Yang Earth and Yin Earth
Both are Earth. Wu is the mountain: solid, protective and unmoving. Ji is garden soil: receptive, fertile and adaptive. Wu holds things up; Ji helps things grow. Read more about Yin Earth (Ji 己), The Cultivator, or explore the Earth element as a whole.
