Yang Metal Day Master (Geng 庚): The Blade

By Five Elements of You · Updated

Yang Metal (庚, Geng) is the seventh of the ten Heavenly Stems, and as a Day Master it carries the archetype The Blade. You turn raw strength into clarity, becoming sharper through tempering rather than force alone.

Your Day Master is the stem on the day pillar of your BaZi chart, the character that stands for you. If yours is Geng Metal, this page describes the temperament it points to, what tends to support it, and how to work with it. Remember that it is one character out of eight: the rest of your chart colors how it shows up.

The nature of Yang Metal

Geng Metal is raw iron, the axe, the sword before it has been polished. It is strong, direct and uncompromising. As a Day Master, Geng describes a decisive, principled and action-oriented temperament: someone who cuts through confusion and gets things done.

Geng people tend to value loyalty, justice and straight talk. They often have a strong sense of right and wrong and will stand up for it, even at a cost. They respect competence and dislike pretense.

The classics call Geng severe and strong, clarified when water tempers it and sharpened when fire works on it. The point is important: Geng becomes truly useful not through raw force but through being refined.

What the classics say

The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text, describes each of the ten stems in four short lines. For Geng it reads: 庚金带煞,刚健为最,得水而清,得火而锐。

The old text calls Geng Metal severe and strong — clarified when water tempers it, sharpened when fire works on it. Force alone is not what makes it useful.

The Blade: natural strengths

Decisiveness. Geng makes the call and acts on it.

Loyalty and justice. Geng protects its people and stands up for what is fair.

Courage. Geng faces difficulty directly.

Execution. Geng is good at turning plans into results, cutting away what isn't needed.

Watch-outs

Bluntness. Geng's honesty can wound when it isn't tempered.

Stubbornness. Once Geng has decided, it can be very hard to change course.

Force over finesse. When frustrated, Geng may push harder instead of thinking differently.

What supports Yang Metal

Geng needs Fire to forge it: challenge, discipline and pressure, the right kind, turn raw strength into a sharp tool. Water also refines Geng, washing it clear and giving its strength somewhere to flow, through communication, learning and expression.

Earth supports Geng the way ore is held in rock, but too much Earth buries it. Geng is at its best when it has a clear purpose, a worthy challenge and an outlet for its energy.

Inner adjustment: working with your nature

In Five Elements of You, balance means changing behavior, never buying objects or colors. A few practices that suit this Day Master:

Temper before you strike. Before giving feedback, pause and decide what you want the other person to be able to do with it.

Seek the forge. Take on one challenge this season that requires skill rather than force.

Let water flow. Write, talk or move to process frustration before acting on it.

Yang Metal and Yin Metal

Both are Metal. Geng is raw iron and the blade: strong, direct and decisive. Xin is the jewel and the fine instrument: delicate, discerning and precise. Geng cuts; Xin refines. Read more about Yin Metal (Xin 辛), The Refiner, or explore the Metal element as a whole.
